to the beach!

if I remember correctly, (and this entry tells me that I am: pretty-depressing-total-so-far) i had planned to walk from High Park to the Ashbridge's Bay to try and make up some ground.

I left late, so this is how far I got before I had to get on the streetcar in order to make it there on time.

bits and pieces

so, here we are on the 31st of May, and it is pretty clear that I have failed in this challenge. my km total is very far from my share of 250km.

it may be worthwhile to try and include the bits and pieces i did manage to accomplish.

so let's start with the Mother's Day flower run, searching for lily of the valley at my favourite flower shops on Avenue Road :)

ps - it was a successful run and my mom was very impressed :)

Stroll

Monday - 3km - partway to work, then to C'est What with Puga after.
Tuesday - 14.12km - went to a book launch at the Lula Lounge.

Got an email on Monday from Elias with the subject, "A FLANEUR IS YOU." In it was a link to an Eye article about a book that one of it's regular columnists, Shawn Micallef, had written: STROLL - Psychogeographic Walking Tours of Toronto.

Apparently a flaneur is simply someone who "wanders their city with the sole purpose of paying attention to it"; and this idea of psychogeography, borne from groups of folks in Europe with more serious goals in mind, is the examination of the effect that geography has on human emotion and behavior.

I do like to wander and explore... but I'm not sure I explore things THAT deeply.

Gonna read the book and see. So far it seems more like a history lesson than a emotional journey.

New Record

View 20100516 in a larger map
Last night I bested last year's Islington hike by 10km -- a total of 32.75km, over a walk that started at noon and ended 12 hours later.

Originally I was just supposed to meet up with Pylon for a little event in Liberty Village (an event involving the consumption of DELICIOUS CUPCAKES), but after a whole lotta butter and sugar and a quick brunch at the Brazen Head, I was back on the street heading Westwards.

I wandered on and off Waterfront Trail, took Lakeshore all the way to Kipling, Kip up to Bloor, then Bloor West eastwards. Since I was passing through their neighbourhood, I texted up two of my favouritest ladies in the whole wide world to join me for a pint at Bryden's.

Afterwards I wandered a bit further east, foraging for fast foods. Eventually got on the subway at High Park.

32.75km

Day 14 - Kingston Road

Walked up to John's for a bit of drinking and movie-ing ("Oh. It's LEGION. I thought we were watching LESION"). It's not an exciting walk, other than the first bit getting out of my home area, but it's nice. Kingston road passes through some nice quiet neighborhoods at the south end, but as you head northeast it seems to turn into the main street of a whole other small town.

12.58km + 4km to work and back

Bits and Bobs

Day 13 was a night out with some visitors from Dallas: drinks at Cayo Coco ($4.50 martinis every Thurs until 8!), some errands at King Biermarkt, and finally dinner at Urban (I ate a kangaroo), desert at Smokes (philly cheesesteak) and then the walk home. ~4.75km

Day 15 was some wandering with Troy, but mostly by car. Managed about 3km.

pretty depressing total so far

so I added things up and it seems that I have only walked ~36.34 km so far. yes, i have started using 2 decimal points - the desperation really shows.

this doesn't spell out failure just yet, but now I am determined to walk to the Ashbridge's bay for beach volleyball instead of driving today.

hello Parkdale, how you doin

after getting back in town Friday night, I felt like I really needed to at least make an attempt. my good friend Alison just got an awesome job, so we went to Harlem Underground to celebrate. On my way to meet Alison, ran into Q at Roncesvalles. He was wearing an awesome light green western shirt :)

uh-oh

I have to write a catch-up post, since I have been away all week. I hadn't even documented the "it's better together" walk :) with Doug. So my first map will be 2010may6 and the private reminder (we won't tell anybody, of course) of the "bonus" kms we came up with.

ugh...

Rain, work, and discourteous frisbee opponents have left me far behind schedule.

Squeezed in ~18k last night, and a very rough map just now:

EDIT: added a reasonable lunchtime walk: total for the day is ~20.45km!

I think I'm all caught up again: 20km, baby. Not bad for a Sunday night.

Started out around 6ish, got home around 11. Even ran into Paul on Mt. Pleasant -- what are the odds of that?

Things of note:
- the parklands behind the Science Centre are pretty darned nice
- Mt. Pleasant is boring

Still need to put in the photos, probably easier for you to just check the album starting at the creepy doll, and stopping at the bag of grapes...

Friday

~2km. Part way to work (grabbed a ride halfway there), then a movie at the AMC Dundas.

GO SEE IRON MAN 2. IT`S WORTH LOSING AT LEAST 15km.

It's Better Together

Emailed Mihaela that afternoon to see if she felt like a catchup walk to Bryden's. Met up with her at the Eaton Centre and we tore those kms up in just over 2h. Although I was seriously considering doing the trip back as well, my feet, shins, a few orange peel lagers and a chicken pad thai were begging me to reconsider. We agreed upon walking the lady home and grabbing the streetcar. Snuck in another 2km when they weren't looking.

~16.85km for the walk, + 4km between work and home. Sweeet.

day five = write off

Big Fat Zero! Wasn't feeling well yesterday. Needed to stay home and sleep it off.

Spent the evening with the Puga trying to squeeze creative juices out of our stones and into Corel Draw.

ugh. No chance at catching up on the weekend either, not with a tournament and a party... unless I manage to pull off a full marathon.

Significant contribution?

or so I thought! google says this walk was ~8.8k. it seemed a lot longer to me, but this just shows I really have to step it up. i really think i should consider running as an option.

Slow Day

Yup. A whopping 4km today. To work and back, along Richmond. Not even worth mapping. There was some distance made at lunch and for the coffee run, but I'm not desperate enough yet to start counting those.
From Mobile

No photos either. Here's one of the sandwich I made last night when I got home.

10km/day is turning out to be a lot harder than I thought; making the time to wander, and allowing enough time to rest these old parts... though I suppose if I started to run... once again: not that desperate.

Jarvis

More baby steps yesterday, but tonight, I will walk home from work and that will hopefully be a considerable contribution to the 500K :)

Edit: I just noticed that this was 3.7k as well, like the first walk on Sunday. Pretty pathetic in comparison with what Doug has walked so far. not a race. right, this is not a race :D

Walked to work. Was reminded in the afternoon that I wanted to check out the beds at West Elm. Walked out that way after work, stopping by a few stores on Queen. Then took the long way back.

A few extra km tonight--tomorrow is 'bee night, so there'll be no energy to spare for walking!

K. Off to a bit of a slow start, but it's not like this is a race... ;P

Captain Amber hosted a BBQ/mini-kegger for our floor hockey team at her place (3RD PLACE! GOGO PYLONS OF DOOM!) There wasn't much time for a huge trek, especially with 3lbs of raw meat on my back.

~4.81km over probably 2h of walking time, not including in-store wandering.

May starts tomorrow!

And we will figure out how to update this somehow :)
